Addressing the Wage Gap: A Reality Check for Companies and Policymakers

I came across this article, and while I disagree with several points made by the Larsen & Toubro Chairman, I do agree with his observation on the need to revise wages in line with inflation. He rightly points out that the Middle East attracts workers by offering 3 to 3.5 times the salary they earn in India. This is a reality check for companies and policymakers, who must address wage disparities before they lead to even greater economic strain.

If workers are willing to accept wages below the minimum set by government schemes like MNREGA, rather than migrating for higher-paying work, it signals a significant gap between what they earn and what they actually need to live. As I mentioned in a previous post, this wage gap between "higher wages" and "living wages" needs urgent attention. Companies must step up and align wages with the true cost of living, or we risk further deepening economic inequality.
