Taiwan’s Opportunity to Strengthen Workplace Democracy

Taiwan’s low unionization rate is eroding worker–management relations and weakening workplace democracy with implications not only for workers’ rights but also for the country’s global reputation (link). As Taiwanese companies become increasingly critical players in global value chains, the need to prioritise decent work, collective bargaining, and workers’ voice in both direct operations and supply chains has never been greater.

The upcoming National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights is a timely moment for action. By strengthening labour laws, protecting human rights, and embedding workplace democracy, Taiwan can set a benchmark for responsible business in Asia.

Concrete measures to boost union participation, promote collective bargaining, and ensure responsible supply chains will not only advance sustainable corporate practices but also position Taiwan as a leader in upholding human rights on the global stage.
